Fa'afafine
Fa'afafine are boys and men who are raised as girls and who take on the traditional roles of women in Samoan society -such as the care of the young and elderly and assisting with household chores. According to most Western anthropological accounts, Fa'afafine are accepted and respected members of society in Samoa. In reality that's not quite the case according to Brian Fuata, a Samoan-born actor who's written and plays all the characters in a performance simply titled Fa'afafine. 20 December 2001

Theatre Du Soleil: The Flood Drummers
'The Flood Drummers' is the latest epic production by Theatre du Soleil's founding director Ariane Mnouchkine, recently performed at the 2002 Sydney festival. In this production the actors, elaborately dressed as Bunraku style puppets, are lifted and manipulated by other actors dressed and masked in black - with the cast also serving delicious food and wine during interval. 21 February 2002
