Mark Corcoran

Mark Corcoran reporting from Syria

For 10 years, Mark Corcoran has been a reporter/producer for 'Foreign Correspondent', filing reports from 35 countries, with a particular focus on South West Asia. Since September 11 2001 he has reported extensively on the regional impact of the ongoing "War on Terror".

Mark Corcoran started his career more than 20 years ago as a cadet journalist with Capital 7 TV in Canberra, before moving to Sydney as a news reporter for the Seven Network. From 1988-92 he worked for SBS-TV's 'Tonight' and 'Dateline' programs covering regional diplomatic and defence issues.

In 1992 he joined the ABC as a producer on 'Four Corners'.

From 1994-97 Mark was a Sydney based reporter/producer on ABC-TV's 'Lateline' and was briefly ABC-TV's Washington correspondent before joining Foreign Correspondent.

Mark has received the Walkley Award for Best International Report (All Media) for his coverage of the conflict in Sierra Leone, a High Commendation from the Walkley Committee for his reporting on Afghanistan's Taliban regime and the UTS/George Munster Award for Independent Reporting.

His international awards include three Gold and Silver World Medals from the New York TV Festivals for his reporting in Iran and Sierra Leone, and the Mohamed Amin/Reuters Award for an Outstanding Contribution to International Newsgathering, for his investigation of the opium industry in Afghanistan. Mark Corcoran is married, with two children and lives in Sydney. He enjoys sleeping on the beach.

In the Walkley Awards for excellence in journalism, announced November 27, China Correspondent Stephen McDonell won the Best Coverage of the Asia-Pacific Region category with a package of stories covering the Sichuan earthquake, the Three Gorges Dam, China Internet and the violent crackdown by China on Tibetan students protesting in Beijing.
In the UN Media Peace Awards announced on Friday October 24, Middle East correspondent Matt Brown won the TV Current Affairs category for "Syria - Iraqi Refugees" and Eric Campbell received a Special commendation for his story from Armenia, "Ghosts of the Past" .
