Shane McLeod

Shane McLeod reporting from Japan

Shane McLeod has been ABC's North Asia correspondent since 2005. From his base in Tokyo, he covers Japan and the Korean peninsula.

Shane has been part of the ABC's international team since 2002, when he took up the post of Papua New Guinea correspondent. He's since reported from across the Asia- Pacific region, from Solomon Islands , to Nepal , Thailand , Singapore and Indonesia – where he was part of the award-winning team that covered the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami from Banda Aceh.

Prior to heading overseas, Shane worked in a number of newsrooms within Australia for the ABC. He started his career in Brisbane , and reported from throughout regional Queensland before posts in Melbourne , and Canberra , where he covered federal politics. He was also part of the team reporting on the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Shane hails from Hervey Bay in Queensland , and studied business and journalism at Queensland University of Technology.

In the Walkley Awards for excellence in journalism, announced November 27, China Correspondent Stephen McDonell won the Best Coverage of the Asia-Pacific Region category with a package of stories covering the Sichuan earthquake, the Three Gorges Dam, China Internet and the violent crackdown by China on Tibetan students protesting in Beijing.
In the UN Media Peace Awards announced on Friday October 24, Middle East correspondent Matt Brown won the TV Current Affairs category for "Syria - Iraqi Refugees" and Eric Campbell received a Special commendation for his story from Armenia, "Ghosts of the Past" .
