Brazil:
Carnivale Music
Listen to: Carnivale Music

In the town of Salvadore on the Brazilian coast it's carnival time. The streets are
filled with rhythmic drumming as the locals perform the capoiera - once a forbidden
dance, a banished hallmark of Brazil's dark past - slave trading.
107 years ago Brazil finally abolished the slave trade, the last country in the world to
do so.

But as Foreign Correspondent's Peter George reports, the passage of time since then
has done little for the 40% of Brazilians with African ancestry:
"...the message of America's black civil rights movement, and of the battle against
apartheid in South Africa, is only now starting to lap at the shores of Brazil."
