Even while the Tork game was being made, the puzzles our hero has
to deal with were challanging today's archeologists. The Mayan written
language (like the fictional world Tork) uses visual symbols, and
as with the game, people are still trying to decipher the code.
But even though every Mayan Indian would have read the language the
same way, 20th century code-breakers have bickered about what the
symbols mean; does a dog represent a dog, or is it the symbol for
the civilisation's god?
Background: Fall of the Mayan Civilisation
From 250AD to about 900AD The Yucatan pennisula, (around the borders
of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador) can be called
the "Classic Maya" civilisation, with the villages becoming
cities and priests carving detailed historys into their monuments.
After then the cultures apparently went into militaristic era, which
would subsequently be almost extinguished by the Spanish colonisation
in the mid-sixteenth century.
