Bailey chasing Christmas gift

Bailey_2 Gold Coast Titans prop Luke Bailey is asking Santa Claus to bring him only one present this year but it's unlikely he'll find it under his Christmas tree.

The Titans co-captain and representative forward says he's asked the big man in red to provide a 2009 season free of injury after missing most of this year with a broken arm and fractured ankle.

His injuries flattened the Titan's chances of posting their maiden finals appearance with Bailey only playing nine times for the season.

His forgettable year made even worse by the fact he was in career best form with averages of 115 metres a match.

Henjak on track

Sam_thaidayBrisbane Broncos fans will be cheering a whole new breed of super stars in 2009 according to second row forward Sam Thaiday.

The Queensland and Australian representative says a number of youngsters will be given their spurs next season with new head coach Ivan Henjak slowly putting together his playing group.

The 23-year-old veteran says he's enjoying the responsibility of being a role model for the Broncos and helping re-establish the club as Queensland's favourite sporting team.

"A lot of players have left after this season which is always hard but we have a lot of kids in our top squad now and it is something we need to build on for the future," Thaiday said.

Smith commits to Storm

Smith Melbourne Storm captain Cameron Smith has extended his contract for another three years keeping him with the club until the end of the 2012 season.

The 25-year-old Australian hooker had fielded interest from the Gold Coast Titans and admits that he considered a move home to Queensland for family reasons, but is happy to stay in Melbourne.

"There was a bit of speculation in the media about the whole Gold Coast thing but my first preference was to be in Melbourne," Smith says.

Stuart wasn't pushed, says ARL

Ricky_stuart1Australian Rugby League (ARL) chairman Colin Love says Ricky Stuart was not forced to stand down as Kangaroos coach in light of his behaviour towards match officials following last month's World Cup final.

Stuart (pictured) has announced he will not be seeking reappointment to the position, his decision coming on the same day a report was handed down regarding an incident involving World Cup match officials director Stuart Cummings the morning after the Kangaroos lost 34-20 to New Zealand at Lang Park.

Stuart made physical contact with Cummings and also levelled verbal abuse at World Cup final referee Ashley Klein, his actions earning him a $20,000 fine.

NRL door not shut on Maitua just yet: Gallop

Reni_maituaNRL chief executive David Gallop says he is not yet in a position to formally de-register sacked Bulldogs backrower Reni Maitua from the league in 2009.

Maitua (pictured) was released by the Bulldogs this week because of a series of disciplinary breaches, which came to a head when he missed a club training session on Monday.

He was allegedly involved in a nightclub incident on Sunday night and the NRL initially stated it would consider not allowing the former Australia international to be registered next season.
