How to Apply
How to apply for jobs at the ABC
The ABC advertises vacant positions, nation wide at www.abc.net.au/jobs. These positions are available to both internal and external candidates and we encourage all interested candidates who meet our eligibility and selection criteria requirements to apply.
Selection in the ABC is based on merit. Merit is assessed by referring to an applicant’s work performance, skills, knowledge, personal qualities, qualifications, experience and potential as they relate to the selection criteria for the position.
We seek to recruit skilled energetic and appropriately qualified staff for all our vacancies. The following advice has been prepared to assist you in preparing your application for ABC vacancies.
Applicants must address the Selection Criteria in their application. Applicants can be short-listed out if they do not address selection criteria. Your application should consist of at least the following two documents:
1. Introductory Letter/Statement addressing the Selection Criteria
Your introductory letter should include the full correct Position Title and Reference Number, in order to express your interest in the position clearly and effectively.
Many capable applicants are not selected for interview because either they do not address the Selection Criteria, or their application does not convince the Selection Committee that they have the skills and abilities to perform in the role to the level required.
In some cases the Selection Criteria is available online at www.abc.net.au/jobs or you can call the advertisement contact person for details. It is important that you read the Advertisement and Selection Criteria thoroughly and we recommend that you keep a copy of the advertisement for future use.
You may wish to use each of the Selection Criteria as a heading. Under each heading explain how your experience, skills and qualifications enable you to meet this criterion providing key examples and/or achievements.
It is up to you to present your case as convincingly as possible, particularly as the ABC often attracts a large field of applicants for available vacancies.
2. Resume or Curriculum Vitae
In order to enable effective and efficient correspondence it is important that your resume includes your:
- Full Name
- Current Address
- Contact Telephone Number/s
- Email Address
Your resume or curriculum vitae will enable the Selection Committee to gain an overview of your current and past employment experience, any educational/trade qualifications or relevant work experience pertaining to the Selection Criteria.
Supporting Documents or Audio Requirements
Any supporting documents or audio requirements, which are required to support your application, will be stated in the advertisement. The ABC will request that you present supporting material at the same time as submitting your application to the ABC National Recruitment Unit. The ABC requires you to submit audio in the form of an audiocassette, video show reel or CD only. You should also be aware that any audio or supporting documents will in most cases, not be returned to you, so please ensure you always have a copy for yourself. Supporting materials will only be advantageous to your application if the line manager has requested them.
Referees
Referees are normally sought for short-listed applicants only. You should provide the names, addresses and contact telephone/facsimile numbers of at least two work related referees. Recent supervisors who are able to comment on your ability to meet the Selection Criteria provide the most useful support for your application. Choose your referees carefully, and remember to confirm their willingness to act as referees before nominating them.
Online Application Form
The ABC may on occasion request that you complete an online application form when you apply for a specific vacancy. This will be stated in the advert. Please note that it is mandatory that you comprehensively complete this online application form in order to be considered for the position.
Applying for Multiple Vacancies
The ABC will not retain applicants' files or resumes. We require you to submit a fresh or separate application (including any supporting requirements) for every position you wish to apply for. This will ensure your full application is being considered for every role you wish to apply for. Do not rely on one application being used by the ABC for different job applications or future jobs.
Closing Dates/Deadlines
Applications (including supporting material) must be received by the National Recruitment Unit by close of business on the date listed in the advertisement. Please take this into consideration when mailing applications. If emailing your application it is your responsibility to ensure all attachments and or supporting documents are easily opened in Word or PDF format unless otherwise specified. Closing date deadlines are strictly adhered to and applications received after the closing date will not be considered.
Recruitment Correspondence
The ABC endeavours to acknowledge every application received. If your application is received via email, it will be acknowledged upon receipt. Applications received via post or fax, will be acknowledged by mail. The average ABC recruitment processes usually takes between four to six weeks to complete, however we aim to inform applicants of their application status as soon as practicable. The committee will contact short-listed applicants for interview and all other applicants will be notified by mail at the conclusion of the recruitment process.
