Spanish fans celebrate Euro victory

Posted June 30, 2008 10:47:00

Spanish soccer supporters in Sydney are celebrating their team's 1-0 win over Germany in the European Championship final in Vienna.

Spain's Fernando Torres scored the only goal of the final in the 33rd minute, after hitting the post with a header 11 minutes earlier.

The last time Spain won a major tournament was in 1964 at the same championship.

Fans watching the game at Sydney's Spanish Club said it had been a long wait.

"I think it's about time that we are not more the underachievers and we are the big achievers," said one fan.

The club's president, Yolanda Sanchez, says about 400 people were at the club to see the game.

"I assure you they'll be out on the streets celebrating for quite some time," she said.

She says the win has brought several generations of Sydney's Spanish community together.
