Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has been released to the Western Warriors after an arrangement to keep him playing for Queensland fell through.

Johnson had expressed his desire to move to the west to settle with partner Jessica Bratich while still playing for the Bulls when available.

But Queensland chief executive Graham Dixon said it was clear that deal could not be reached.

"Mitch had previously worked with us on an arrangement that would allow him to have his home in Perth and play for Queensland whenever he was available,'' he said in a statement.

"It became apparent this week that as much as both of us would like this situation to work, it was going to be become increasingly challenging for all of us.

"Mitch and I and [coach] Trevor [Barsby] had a good chat about things yesterday and we've taken the decision to release Mitch to WA."

The left arm quick says it was a difficult decision but is now looking forward to getting settled and preparing for Australia's upcoming one-day series in Darwin.

"Obviously this hasn't been an easy decision to make and I will leave with some regrets, but also with plenty of fond memories," he said.

"I've wished the boys the best for the coming season and will look forward to catching up with them all when our paths next cross."

Barsby says Johnson will be sorely missed on and off the field, but felt he was doing the best thing for his career.

"Mitchell was very upset about not being able to play with the Bulls because that's where he's grown and he's part of the family here," he said.

"But he's also been big enough to look at his career and understand where he needs to be to get every opportunity possible with cricket and also his personal life."

WACA chief executive Graeme Wood says Johnson is already familiar with a number of people involved with the Warriors.

"He's also had contact in the past with Dennis Lillee and knows [coach] Tom Moody well," he said.

"We're just over the moon that he's made that decision and we welcome him with open arms."
