New medical precinct planned for Port

Posted July 25, 2008 13:24:00

Steps are being taken towards the establishment of a new medical precinct in Port Macquarie.

The local council has voted to prepare a draft local environment plan to rezone properties in Highfields Circuit, which is near the Port Macquarie Base Hospital.

Council administrator Dick Persson says consultation will now take place with all relevant stakeholders, including property owners in Highfields Circuit.

He says there is a local need for more medical services and the new precinct would provide the necessary space.

"We were approached by local GPs not that long ago, who said they were finding it difficult to find the appropriately zoned land for the sort of medical practice that today's community needs and they need for a viable practice," he said.

"So we have responded fairly quickly here by moving to this stage. It's not a final decision, we'll be going to the community to consult and listen to all the views."
