Anglican Church moves to end gay bishop ordination

Posted July 29, 2008 14:14:00

A group of senior Anglican clergy has announced new proposals to try to preserve the church's unity by ending the ordination of gay bishops and stopping the blessing of same-sex relationships.

These proposals demand concessions from both liberals and traditionalists. Liberal churches in North America are asked not to ordain bishops living in openly gay relationships, nor to hold services of blessing for gay couples.

But traditionalist churches are also criticised for their responses to the current crisis.

Several African churches, including those in Nigeria, Kenya and Rwanda have appointed bishops to serve traditionalist parishes inside the United States.

The statement proposes that no more such bishops should be appointed.
