Magnitude 5.9 quake strikes off Vanuatu

An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck off Vanuatu overnight, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said, but there was no immediate warning of a tsunami.

The undersea tremor, which was 90 kilometres deep, hit 464 kilometres north-west of the country's second city Luganville on the island of Espiritu Santo at 4:26pm (local time), according to the USGS.

There were no reports of casualties.
