Pope Benedict urges race tolerance

Posted August 18, 2008 07:11:00

Pope Benedict has entered a row over racism in Italy by urging Christians everywhere to combat intolerance towards foreigners.

In an address to pilgrims at his summer residence Castel Gondolfo, the Pope said there had been worrying displays of racism in several countries.

On Friday Italy's best-selling Catholic magazine used the word "fascism" in an article criticising the Government's response to a crime wave that many Italians blame on illegal immigrants.
