Victorian police have apologised to a Jewish man who was assaulted and racially vilified in front of an off-duty officer in the Melbourne suburb of Caulfield.

Thirty-four-year-old Menachem Vorchheimer was walking to his synagogue with his two children in 2006 when he was attacked and abused by footballers from Ocean Grove, who had been to the races in a bus driven by off-duty policeman Terence Moore.

Mr Vorchheimer was punched and had his skull cap ripped off.

Two of the footballers were subsequently convicted and a third was fined for offensive behaviour and using insulting language.

Mr Vorchheimer complained to the police and today Senior Constable Moore apologised to Mr Vorchheimer and his family and expressed his regret that he did not try to intervene.

Mr Vorchheimer said he had not sought nor received financial compensation, and that his sole aim was to see racial and religious vilification removed from the community.
