Confusion over Dalai Lama's massacre report

By China correspondent Stephen McDonell

Posted August 22, 2008 07:06:00

There is confusion over comments attributed to the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, about a mass killing this week.

In an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde, the Dalai Lama is quoted as saying that Chinese soldiers opened fire on a crowd of Tibetans on Monday.

He reportedly said that the exact death toll was yet to be confirmed but said he had heard that 140 people were killed.

But his aides at the Tibetan Government-in-exile say he may have been misquoted because they do not have detailed information about recent deaths or injuries, or exact dates of any recent disturbances.
