Outback gallery has bush art flavour

Posted August 22, 2008 09:00:00

A new art gallery will be opened at the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame in Longreach tomorrow night to honour one of its founders.

Hugh Sawrey worked closely with RM Williams to set up the centre in western Queensland and was also a well-known bush artist.

Hall of fame chief executive officer Ben Mcguire says the new gallery will focus on bush art, but will also be used to attract major travelling exhibitions to the city.

Mr Mcguire says Sawrey died in 1999, but he will be long remembered.

"One of the charters of the Stockman's Hall of Fame was to promote Australian bush art, so to have a functioning art gallery now full-time sits very well in terms of what the hall is all about," he said.

"We'll be having rolling exhibitions coming through the place and to celebrate the opening we have two private Hugh Sawrey collections which have kindly been donated for a couple of months."
