Tech jobs to bolster Ballarat economy: council

Posted August 28, 2008 09:30:00

The Ballarat council says new technology sector jobs will help sustain the city's economy.

IBM will expand its Ballarat operation, creating 300 jobs over the next five years.

The council's chief executive, Anthony Schinck, says Ballarat's economy is growing at 1.4 per cent a year.

He says the city needs the jobs growth to support the increasing population.

"I think it's important for us to get an even better understand of how to manage that growth and certainly from the council's perspective, we are looking very strongly at population growth in Ballarat," he said.

"We need to continue to grow the economy to support that sort of population growth, to make sure that Ballarat remains a very livable but also economically viable city."
