MP wants carbon emission labelling

Posted August 29, 2008 09:22:00

A Federal Government MP from western Victoria is calling for labelling on products to show how much carbon was emitted during manufacturing.

The Member for Corangamite, Darren Cheeseman, says he believes consumers will soon be demanding to know how much carbon was released during the making of most products.

He says the information should be printed on product labels.

"We have on many of our food products, disclosure about the ingredients, that's in it, disclosure around what preservatives might be in it ... I think what Australians want into the future is disclosure around the carbon intensity of products," he said.
