A US guided missile destroyer, named after the father and grandfather of US Presidential candidate John McCain has docked at Station Pier in Melbourne.

The USS John S McCain, is in Melbourne to commemorate the arrival of the Great White Fleet exactly 100 years ago.

The warship is named after both John Sidney McCain Sr and John Sidney McCain Jr, the grandfather and father of Arizona Senator and Republican Presidential candidate John McCain.

John Sidney McCain Sr served in the original Great White Fleet, which was an armada of 16 battleships sent around the world by President Theodore Roosevelt 100 years ago.

That fleet made 20 port calls on six continents, 3 of them in Australia.

Two hundred US sailors liked Melbourne so much they decided to stay.

During the visit, the sailors will take part in a number of events including a friendly baseball game and a commemoration ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance.
