The Liberal Party spokesman for Health, Kim Hames, has told a health forum he can not give a guarantee the party will no longer accept donations from tobacco companies.

The Liberal Party received the donations during the last election campaign and also had a staff member from a tobacco company work as a consultant.

Stephen Hall from the Australian Council on Smoking and Health asked Dr Hames to give an assurance the practice would not continue.

Dr Hames says the Liberal Party has not received any donations from tobacco companies during this campaign, but he can not say that it will not happen again.

"I'm not in a position to give a guarantee that the Liberals will adopt that stance," he said.

"All I can say to you is that it hasn't happened during this campaign and they are fully aware of my strong opposition to that occurring."
