Teson Trim struggles to maintain jobs

Posted September 5, 2008 09:07:00

A car parts manufacturer in Euroa is struggling to stay afloat and about 100 jobs are at risk.

Teson Trims at Euroa has about 120 staff but is suffering because of a downturn in local vehicle production.

It's been a supplier of car upholstery to Ford, which recently announced 350 job cuts at its Victorian plants.

Teson Trim told staff on Wednesday night, the company was having financial difficulties.

It's the latest manufacturer to be hit by a downturn in the Australian automotive industry.

The Mayor of the Strathbogie Shire Council, Greg Carlson says there's still some chance the jobs can be saved.

"I wouldn't say that the jobs have been definitely lost, but I think they'd have to be given the news," he said.

"Obviously the company has been operating in a very tough and competitive environment for a very long time."

The Nationals MP for Benalla, Bill Sykes, says the region has already been affected by ten years of drought and the loss of about 92 jobs will have a huge impact.

"I think it's absolutely critical that the Brumby government intervene and ensure that those jobs are protected, so that we can continue to survive the tough times in Northern Victoria," he said.
