Pair escape Yackandandah house blaze

Posted September 5, 2008 11:00:00

Two people escaped a fire that destroyed a house in Yackandandah last night.

Fire crews were called to the blaze in the weatherboard home on the Myrtleford-Yackandandah Road about 3:00am AEST.

The house was fully alight and firefighters could not save it.

Captain Cameron McKern from the Country Fire Authority says two people were inside when the fire started.

"At this stage we believe the occupant woke from the smell of smoke rather than a smoke detector and it is a warning for them, if it is actually smoke, the smell of smoke that did wake them, they're very, very lucky and [I] certainly encourage all people to fit smoke detectors to their homes," he said.

Police and fire specialists are investigating the cause of the blaze.
