No surprises: Roozendaal in, Costa out
Posted
Updated
New South Wales Premier Nathan Rees has unveiled his new look Cabinet, appointing former roads minister Eric Roozendaal as the state's new Treasurer and handing Labor heavyweight Joe Tripodi the finance portfolio.
The new frontbench has been officially sworn in during a ceremony at Government House in Sydney.
The chief justice and lieutenant Governor Jim Spiegelman filled in for Governor Marie Bashir, who is overseas.
As expected, Deputy Premier Carmel Tebbutt has been handed the environment and climate change portfolio, while Joe Tripodi will take on finance.
Ms Tebbutt says looking forward to the challenges of her new portfolio.
"Climate change is one the issues confronting our generation," she said.
"We are putting it at the centre of government. We are making sure that we are ready to address the challenges of climate change. It's a critical time."
As Treasurer, Eric Roozendaal has been handed the difficult task of bringing down a mini-Budget in eight weeks and convincing credit ratings agencies to maintain the state's AAA rating.
Former education minister John Della Bosca replaces Reba Meagher in health, despite the recent Iguanas nightclub scandal. He will be replaced in education by Verity Firth.
Frank Sartor's planning portfolio has gone to Kristina Keneally, transport has gone to David Campbell while Matt Brown has taken on Mr Campbell's police portfolio.
Linda Burney has been promoted to community services while Kevin Greene has been demoted to gaming and racing.
Newcomers Michael Daley and David Borger take over roads and housing.
'Rebuilding'
It comes after a tumultuous day on Friday in which Treasurer Michael Costa was sacked by the Premier Morris Iemma, who later resigned after failing to win the Right faction's support.
Nathan Rees met with Caucus yesterday and negotiations for portfolios were only finalised this morning.
Mr Rees says it is a capable and well-balanced team that he hopes will breathe renewed life into the State Government.
"We will rebuild our credibility," he said.
"Not in a week, not in a day, not in a month, not in six months. This is piece-by-piece."
The Premier gave himself the arts portfolio.

What a disgrace that Mr Della Bosca has the audacity to be part of this short term government - Iguana will come back to haunt Mr Rees in the fullness of time.

You obviously don't know him personally. He's a tireless worker with a wealth of experience and a sensible older head who's attempted to steady the ship in recent times.
The Iguana stuff was orchestrated to discredit him because he is such an assett. Dig a little deeper than the Daily Telegraph headlines if you want the real story on these issues.
I think he will relish the Health challenge.
The opposition wanted him gone because he is such a good performer.Agree (0) Alert moderator

It's hard to dig deeper when he refuses to talk to police, changes his story, and writes the script being used.
If he's not guilty, he does an awfully good impersonation of it.
Six people who were there and had nothing to gain from it have all complained about him. Sounds more like his stupidity than a conspiracy.Agree (0) Alert moderator

sounds like you need to make a labor party disclaimer there.
The only people who orchestrated the incident is Della Bosca and his wife who were absolutely rude to the staff and attempted to misuse their power, and then subsequently went about trying to cover up the whole saga. Add this to his string of driving offences which you can't try and blame on the Telegraph and you have a man who should have been sacked all together.
The new cabinet has a different look but the same rotten stench. But then NSW was stupid enough to re-elect Labor so I guess you will continue to pay for the mistake.Agree (0) Alert moderator

what they think of him and his wife.
I think after reading all the comments today we should do what all governments do to councils when they get it wrong.
Appoint an Administrator until the state is out of debt.
Then have an other election, Jemma walked into a state disaster after Carr, and now this poor sole has inherited this mess, put in the libs and it will take years to get the state back on its feet as it will with the new premier.

Who cares about Iguana night club incident. We should be focusing on the future and the word is that Dela Bosca is a brilliant and dedicated worker. I hope he is and that he can rebuild the health care system that has been let go in the past. We need to strengthen medicare, and I don't see the Liberals doing that when they support the private health system, which will lead us to a total failure to provide good health care to all, as is the state of the American system.

But reading that there had not been any comments added quickly shows that voters of NSW have lost confidence in State Labor party and they just do not give two hoots about who is there in the cabinet and who is not. well what chance will kids have now of not being brainwashed in our public schools. Rees has written the unions an open cheque book to indoctrinate the students with left wing views now a member of his left wing faction is in charge of the portfolio, watch for mass exoduses to private schools and the smaller faith based schools.
Perhaps though the minister will be able to clean up the mess her new boss has left her with the shameful news of lead poisoning in the water at schools. No doubt that will come back to haunt the new premier who was responsible as water minister for this low act, poisonong the lids with lead and now open season in poisoning their minds with left wing garbage, quite appropriate from a garbage collector who worked for both Orkopoulos and Iemma.Agree (0) Alert moderator

...and when kids who can only regurgitate left-wing ideologies without any thought for what they are saying are the ones who get promoted above those who know how to think and propose alternate ideas, the problem of having foolish decision makers in government occurs... rather much like what is happening now in NSW.
When kids who question and propose alternate solutions are shot down without any questioning of the merit of their opinion we end up with the situation of the current political system which is currently eating at and destroying our society.
Persecution and bullying of intellectual thought is currently pervading the state school system so as to destroy us. Yes, we are our own worst enemy. In a democracy, we are not ruled by the best or the brightest, but by the average. In a left-wing based system we are not ruled by the average, but by those who are manipulated by corrupted officials who maintain their dominance by crushing and destroying any notion of free thought and free speech.Agree (0) Alert moderator

how wrong you are, I am president of a P&C and have been involved in interviewing teachers under the new scheme, the only problem with it is that it only seems to be open to casuals, all the vacancies should be open to both full time and casuals. There are some excellent casuals out there, and there some ordinary ones just the same for full time teachers.
read the whole thing and you will see that my objection is that some teachers do not teach what they are supposed to teach rather they indoctrinate young children with their left wing leaning views and that will now be discretely given a rubber stamp from the ministers office which is wrong.
Then read the second paragrapg. I feel for Verity Firth, fancy being given education to fix up, look at the news today, the new premier is responsible as the former water minister for the fact that there is lead poisoning in school water because he did SFA when he was water minister and now she will be left with less money to try and fix that and all the other maintenance problems in schools. When I was president at my son's primary school and the local Labour member put out a piece of blatant propaganda about how much they had spent at the school and then had the hide to ask me to endorse it i said no, we had been promised $100 000 for a library and electrical upgrade that got spent on the Olympics instead and then the file got put away as a completed. When I said if anything I would endorse the Opposition canidate, what a surprise, they suddenly found the money 2 days before the election, so it's the whole rotten bunch and we should get rid of state governments and just have a Federal governmentAgree (0) Alert moderator

It takes time, but the chickens generally do come home to roost. Back in the early 90's a few of us were claiming that John Fahey's (Liberal) government's attemp to have the 2000 Olympics staged in Sydney would have a major negative impact down the track and we were laughed at.
Spending on the olympics exceeded $8 billion and apart from a couple of stadiums which are now white elephants and a four kilometere rail link from Lidcombe to OLympic Park there is absolutely nothing to show for it.
Of course NSW Labor has played an enormous part in the continuing degeneration of services, it has been greatly assisted by a small group of incompetents masquerading as an opposition
There's pretty well bugger all talent in Macquarie St at present, Rees has to do the best he can with what he has. The next 3 years promise to be remarkably interesting.Agree (0) Alert moderator

Stoo: How weird. My father-in-law & myself were just talking about this yesterday - how the state's problem's now are possibly a direct consequence of paying too much for the Olympics.
On another point, how many who have commented here wanting an early election called, actually voted for the Liberals last election? Are you still upset about the result? The state of NSW's economy was bad then but the Libs still couldn't give the knock out punch. Peter Debham lost a so called unloseable election. I'm not a Labor voter but somehow think that even the Liberals would do no better - they will certainly want to privatise electricity down the track but that's another matter. I also tend to think that if the Libs do win office at the next election, they will come out and say " we have inherited a mess that is worse then what we originally thought".
And finally, as for John Della Bosca - we have really become too preoccupied about personalities and their misdemeanours. The Daily Telegraph for days had page after page after page of this incident. He has been cleared by the NSW & Federal police, lso ets get back to the job at hand.Agree (0) Alert moderator

Some misconceptions in this forum.
1. Iguanagate - Della Bosca and Neal weren't "cleared" by the DPP's, rather they found there was insufficient evidence for a conviction. Both sides said the others were lying, and the DPP's had no legal way to determine the truth.
2. Nathan Rees's "new broom" obviously has holes in the bristles since Joe Tripodi managed to slip through. If the new Premier was 100% genuine then Tripodi and Obeid would be gone too. Same brothel, almost the same workers, just a different coat of paint and a name change. The patrons won't be fooled.Agree (1) Alert moderator

The "pollies" we deserve!
The opposition will bring about changes...just like the republicans in the usa!
It is my belief that we should be writing to the new premier and local members telling them what we "need" or don't we know?
Really what a better education system...public? Or is it just get rid of this mob and let the "neo-cons" do their thing? More money for the "private sector" I mean Rudd has kept thier over the top federal funded amounts in place for several years!
If we are talking about a better system from Labor then it must be in concert with the "feds", remember most of these pollies went to private schools and so do their children!!!! Therefore, you must be forceful and that doesn't mean backing the "teachers fed" who are basically self serving and not affliliated to the ALP!
The same for health....you want a good public health system? Demand that public monies go mainly into "public health" and not just "topping up the private sector" We need hospitals that can achieve high quality/quantity services. It has taken me via the private health system i.e. GP's and specialists to find out that I had "eye lashes" growing the wrong way, over 12 months and that was hundreds of $'s out of pocket and many trips to Sydney (from central coast) to get electolsys on eye lashes. It can be done up here but the only specialist with the "BATTERIES" for the device is in Sydney????????? Ridiculus, unbelievable!
Demand these people in government do our "bidding" too, expect to pay more for a "good service". Demand that public funding go to public infrastructure, private enterprise in these areas is questionable and substandardAgree (0) Alert moderator

The NSW labour government is an absolute joke, as are there colleagues in the other states. The only person with an ounce of guts or political courage was Michael Costa- and look what happened to him. Apparently it doesnt pay not to toe the party line and have even a semblance of individuality or personal opinion in Australian politics. Costa has become a virtual political martyr, he knew his policies and beliefs, especially concerning climate change, would be unpopular in the electorate but he maintained them anyway because of his personal integrity. It seems that Australians and their political masters have immense difficulty swallowing honesty in this day and age. Yawn......NSW government, Labor, Unions. Hopeless, the whole lot. Why is anyone surprised over the NSW mess? Bob Carr did nothing for ten years except blind the media to his ineptitude. Of course the place is now broke, although according to Glenn Milne in yesterday's Tele, it is sitting in only 2nd place behind Victoria, the state that Jeff Kennet fixed and which Bracks then f--kd.
But let's give Labor a chance here, voters. Let them have another two years to re-form, re-focus and make ammends for their predacessors. Give them more time to take NSW from 2nd place to the top of the ladder in the "Brokest States" stakes. Come on, you know they can do it!Agree (0) Alert moderator
