Church fears growing wealth-poverty divide

The Catholic Church says the rising cost of living is creating bigger division between affluence and poverty in Australia.

Congregations across Queensland will mark Social Justice Sunday this weekend.

Sister Sue Flood from the Diocesan Catholic Social Justice Commission says more families are under increasing financial pressure.

"We all know when we go to the supermarket each week and our bills are getting higher and higher for the same things and the people who were once surviving on the bare minimum must be finding it very difficult," she said.

"People are making different choices about the extra things that they include in their family package I suppose.

"I also think though that there are more people at the less affluent end of the scale who are struggling even more."
