British Olympic chief lauds Aussie sporting spirit

Posted September 29, 2008 12:21:00

Visiting British Olympics chief Lord Colin Moynihan has heaped praise on Australia for its sporting prowess and likened Saturday's AFL grand final to a "spiritual experience".

Lord Moynihan says Britain holds up Australia as the "model" for how to run a successful Olympics.

The head of the British Olympic Association says behind the healthy rivalry between the two nations, is a deep respect for Australia's sporting talent and passion.

He says he was reminded of this when watching the weekend AFL grand final in Melbourne where the underdogs won.

"It's when sport almost becomes a spiritual experience and that is why Australia is such a great country in terms of its sporting aspirations," he said.

"It's a great sporting nation. It's in the DNA of this country."
