Govt representatives to address gas blast hearing

Posted October 3, 2008 10:23:00

The Senate Economics Committee will conduct hearings in Bunbury today as part of its inquiry into the gas explosion at Varanus Island.

Yesterday, the committee heard gas prices in Western Australia have risen 70 per cent since June's explosion.

Today, company, local and Federal Government representatives from the south-west will address the hearing.

The Bunbury Wellington Economic Alliance says gas supplies to the region immediately after the explosion were cut by about 90 per cent.

Bunbury Mayor David Smith will tell the committee the current, single Dampier to Bunbury pipeline needs improving.

"The additional pipe or greater width of pipe and greater capacity [is needed] to make sure that we're not disadvantaged in terms of future growth," he said.

The hearing, which is open to the public, will be held at the Lord Forrest Hotel.
