Community told of Mulga Rock mine plans

Posted October 3, 2008 10:30:00

A company which recently began exploratory drilling for uranium at Mulga Rock in the goldfields has, for the first time, addressed the local community about its plans.

Speaking at the What's Down the Track forum in Kalgoorlie yesterday, Energy and Minerals Australia's managing director Chris Davis said the project would create opportunities for the goldfields.

Mr Davis says the Mulga Rocks deposit will operate as a mine for up to 40 years over which time the local community will play an important role.

"We'll be employing people based in the Kalgoorlie region for a long time," he said.

"This isn't people who come up and spend maybe two or five years here.

"The Mulga Rocks will be a mine out there for 20, maybe 40 years, maybe longer."

Mr Davis will meet the Shire of Menzies this month in the first of a series of planned community consultations.
