Cowra council gets tough on footpath signage

Posted October 3, 2008 12:00:00

The Cowra council is cracking down on businesses who put furniture and advertising signage on footpaths.

The council plans to start policing its footpath trading policy, which requires businesses who use the footpath to have a permit.

Council general manager James Roncon says the policy was adopted almost a decade ago, but has not been enforced.

He says it aims to ensure businesses are properly insured against risk of injury caused by signs or furniture.

"Quite often people will put things out on footpath like trolleys and signs," he said.

"It only takes somebody to trip over that and it can create a hazard.

"With the increasing number of people using wheelchairs and 'gofers', some of these things at time can provide impediments."

Mr Roncon says the council is "significantly" discounting the processing for the permit until the end of November.

"We are only going to charge an administrative fee of $39 for the next few months in the lead up to the formal implementation of the footpath trading policy," he said.

"From December onwards we'll go back to the processing charge of $181."
