Queensland Reds forward James Horwill will not travel with the Australian rugby squad on its spring tour after succumbing to a foot injury.

Horwill has been unable to shake off a ligament problem he sustained during the Wallabies' victory over South Africa in July.

The back rower will require surgery and could be out for up to six months.

Coach Robbie Deans says the only option was for Horwill to pull out of the tour.

"Unfortunately the verdict of the specialist was that James is going to require surgery immediately to get the ligament repaired," Deans said in a statement.

"The injury had been given plenty of opportunity to settle but hasn't. There really wasn't any choice but to get the operation done, and get it done now."
