Tas rates poorly in sport participation and activity

Posted October 4, 2008 09:34:00

Tasmania is well back in the field of sports active people.

The Bureau of Statistics has issued figures on sport and physical recreation participation, for the year ending in April.

Across the board Tasmania's participation rate is very low.

Two-thirds of adults play sport or do some sort of physical recreation but that is the third lowest rate in the country.

The news on Tasmanian children is a bigger worry.

Only 59 per cent of boys and girls participate, the lowest percentage in the country.

Of the sexes, the boys came last with 60 per cent, while the girls came fourth, with 58 per cent.

Nationally, soccer is the most popular game for boys, and swimming, just ahead of netball, is the most popular for girls.
