The Tasmanian branch of the Australian Hotels Association says a ban on serving round of drinks in the early hours of the morning is too prescriptive and not the answer when it comes to dealing with irresponsible drinking.

Three Melbourne clubs are trialing the ban to reduce binge drinking and encourage the responsible serving of alcohol.

The general manager of the AHA, Steve Old, says he will monitor the success of the trial but thinks it may be going a step too far.

"There's a lot of other issues and we've been saying it for a long time there needs to be a cultural change there needs to be an education process done if we are to change people's drinking cultures and the irresponsible drinking culture that's out there," Mr Old said.

"So unfortunately everyone's trying to make these little whim decisions that they think's going to suddenly fix what are reasonably big problems," he said.
