Tasmanians feature in national awards ceremony

Posted October 5, 2008 09:00:00

Tasmanian Bev Cannell has been recognised for her extensive contribution to her local community.

The 48 year old from Rosebery has been volunteering in a range of areas for more than 18 years.

Last night at a dinner in Alice Springs she was presented with a Regional Arts Australia Volunteer Award for sustained contribution.

"I just totally love keeping myself occupied and volunteering and helping out wherever I can. I think it's important to have volunteers," Ms Cannell said.

And Launceston's Karlee Foster has been awarded for her extensive contribution to the arts.

She was presented with a Regional Arts Australia Volunteer Youth Award.

Ms Foster, who is Involved in eight voluntary boards and committees, says she is committed to the arts being better recognised.

"I'm really passionate about advocacy for young people particularly in Tasmania on a national level," Ms Foster said.

Young artists in Tasmania are extremely talented and sometimes don't have the support that they really deserve. So I just want to get it out there that you can make a career out of the arts," she said.
