Libs concern for future of Adult Education

Posted October 5, 2008 10:24:00

The number of people enrolling in Adult Education courses is dropping, with just over 29,000 participants in the last year.

The State Opposition is concerned by the figures, in particular on the north west coast and in the south where the biggest decreases have been seen.

The Liberal's education spokeswoman, Sue Napier, says more has to be done to ensure Adult Education remains an option for those looking to broaden their skills.

"We've had quite a significant drop in not only the enrolments but also in the number of contact hours that are being provided," Ms Napier said.

"And that seems to fit with some concerns we're picking up from staff that they feel Adult Education is being de-emphasised," she said.

The Director of Information Services and Community Learning, Siobhan Gaskell says adults are simply being given more choice, with other courses offered through a number of groups funded by both the State and Federal Governments.
