Technical college in high demand

Posted October 6, 2008 11:23:00

The Australian Technical College North Queensland has more demand for places next year than it can accommodate.

This popularity has remained, despite the Federal Government withdrawing its support for the college.

Eighty people registered for student positions at an open day over the weekend, taking total applications for first year trade training next year to 230.

College chief executive Roslyn Baker says community support for the college has been overwhelming and she is confident the facility can stay open with or without federal funding.

"We've had amazing support from parents, from industry and from the community, so there has certainly been a need in north Queensland given that we're a booming economy, the second fastest growing in Australia," she said.

"There's certainly been that need in north Queensland that's driven demand."
