Qld Govt moves to delay new councils' elections

Posted October 6, 2008 12:00:00

The Queensland Government wants to delay the next council election by six months to give local governments more time to organise their budgets.

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt says he will take a proposal to Cabinet to move the election from March 2012 to October.

He says councils are supportive.

"Local governments across Queensland have voted in favour of that now saying that they would prefer October elections rather than March," he said.

"[This] would give them some clear space between their election and the time at which they're going to have to frame their first budget and also to have some space between themselves and the state and federal budgets."
