Local businesses vie for tourism awards

Posted October 6, 2008 12:10:00

Tourism operators from the Illawarra and New South Wales south coast have made a strong showing amongst the finalists for the NSW Tourism Awards.

A total of 27 businesses across the region have been nominated for awards, in categories which range from adventure tourism to backpacker accommodation.

The Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk is up for best new tourism development, after winning the regional award for the south coast.

The general manager of the Illawarra Fly, Shaun Halen, says the awards provide goals to aim for.

"A lot of work goes into the process definitely, and it's a very good opportunity to look at your business and actually to put a bit of strategy into what you're doing," he said.

"But the recognition certainly is very nice from the industry, and the opportunities that presents as well."
