The trial of alleged Palm Island rioter Lex Wotton is underway in the District Court in Brisbane.

Wotton is accused of being involved in the 2004 riot on Palm Island in north Queensland that followed the death of Mulrunji Doomadgee in the Island's police watch-house.

Wotton was greeted by a group of supporters protesting against black deaths in custody as he walked into the Brisbane court this morning with his lawyer.

The first day of his trial has been taken up with legal argument before Judge Michael Shanahan.

A jury is expected to be sworn in tomorrow and the trial has been set down for three weeks.
