Green group seeks more time for coal trucking talks

Posted October 7, 2008 12:01:00

A local environment group wants an extended timetable for discussions on a plan to increase coal trucking operations through Wollongong.

The Wollongong Climate Action Network says despite increased concerns about global warming, road congestion and noise pollution, the New South Wales Government is seeking to increase coal transport by road to the Port Kembla Coal Terminal.

Climate action spokesman Rowan Huxtable says road freight is highly subsidised through Government funding for oil and roads, and he has called for a broader debate on its environmental impacts.

"We think that people in Wollongong might be interested to have a discussion about the proposal to have all these extra coal trucks," he said.

The current exhibition period for the plan closes next Friday.
