Debate heats up over Traveston dam

Posted October 7, 2008 15:32:00

The Queensland Government says it would be disgraceful to set environmental policy for political reward.

The proposed Traveston Crossing dam, in the state's south-east, has sparked heated debate in State Parliament.

Labor defector Ronan Lee has taken his place today as a Greens' MP, prompting an environmental tone to question time.

Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg asked if the Government will go ahead with the Traveston dam, even at the cost of Green preferences.

"Just to make it very clear to the Greens indeed," he said.

Sustainability Minister Andrew McNamara says the dam is needed, whether or not the Government loses Green support.

"It would be a disgrace to say 'well that's something we should take into account'," he said.

Premier Anna Bligh says the dam still requires federal approval.

"If it gets the tick it will be a part of Queensland's water supply," she said.

She says 80 per cent of the land has been purchased.
