Residents in western Sydney have been given an opportunity to take their grievances directly to the Premier and cabinet ministers, with the first of several community forums being held tonight.

Around 200 people showed up to the event at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith.

Premier Nathan Rees set the tone.

"The real test of democracy is not if politicians listen, that should be a given, the real issue is whether once we've listened, we act," he said.

The Premier was asked to justify spending on V8 supercars, the Mardi Gras and government chauffeurs.

Pensioner Fred Bewkiles complained about not being able to get access to dental healthcare.

The Premier has promised the forum will be the first of many.
