Actor Nick Nolte suffered a minor hand injury overnight when he fled an electrical fire that gutted the living room at his Malibu mansion.
According to Sheriff's Department Lieutenant Scott Chew, the 67-year-old suffered a small cut to his right hand as he broke a window to escape flames.
Inspector Sam Padilla, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department, said the Tropic Thunder star also suffered smoke inhalation.
Damage to Nolte's property is estimated at $US3.5 million ($4.9 million).
The Fire Department's Inspector James Barnes said there has been damage to the structure and contents of the house, but the house was not destroyed. The flames were confined to the living room.
"Nick Nolte was there apparently with a water hose trying to extinguish the fire himself and, of course, we came to help him out," Inspector Barnes said.
Lieutenant Chew said the fire was believed to have been triggered by an electrical malfunction.
Nolte's spokesman, Arnold Robinson, said in a statement the actor was "grateful" to firefighters and police "for their quick response and assistance."
