Former Victorian premier Steve Bracks has been appointed to chair the Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association (ASTRA).

Mr Bracks takes over from former New South Wales premier Nick Greiner, who is retiring, and will find himself going head-to-head with former Queensland premier Wayne Goss, who chairman of Free TV Australia - the industry body representing commercial, free-to-air TV licensees.

Mr Bracks says he is looking forward to driving changes in digital media policy.

"It's a great opportunity for me to be involved in something which is on the frontier of good public policy in Australia; and that is making sure that we have broadcasting legislation and rules which are designed not just for the next two or three years, but the next decade," he said.
