Posted October 8, 2008 22:35:00

Police in South Africa has said that the death toll in an accident when a bus plunged into a river in the north-eastern Mpumalanga province has risen to 31.

"The death toll in the accident which happened yesterday (Tuesday) has risen from 27 to 31," police spokesman superintendent Abie Khoabane said.

The accident happened after the driver lost control of the bus and 27 people were killed on the spot. Four others died later, he said.

Twenty-nine others were injured in the crash, he added.

In May, a bus accident in the southern province of Eastern Cape killed at least 28 people.
