S Africa's ANC gripped by internal turmoil

By Africa Correspondent Andrew Geoghegan

South Africa's ruling party is close to splitting, according to the Government's former defence minister, Mosiuoa Lekota.

He and several other members of the African National Congress (ANC) are threatening to form a new party.

The ANC has been in turmoil since it forced Thabo Mbeki to resign as South African President last month, and many of his close political allies also quit.

Mr Lekota was among them and he is now warning that some prominent members of the ANC may leave the party that has ruled since the end of apartheid.

"Today we are serving divorce papers," he said.

Mr Lekota condemned the leadership of the ANC for its arrogance and has threatened to form a new party to contest next year's general election.
