NRMA backs Premier's highway upgrade call

Posted October 9, 2008 13:22:00

The head of the New South Wales peak motoring organisation is welcoming a call by Premier Nathan Rees for a $1 billion upgrade to the Princes Highway.

The money is expected to come from the Federal Government's AusLink funding pool.

NRMA president Alan Evans wants the State Government to top up the federal contribution to fix far south coast black spots at Dignam's Creek near Cobargo and Victoria Creek south of Batemans Bay.

Mr Evans says the sites have claimed more than their share of fatalities.

"The money has been set aside by the Federal Government," he said.

"What we've go to do now is mount the arguments, put the case forward, and make sure that we get a share of that funding for the road so that the Princes Highway and the Kings Highway and the Snowy Mountains Highway, all key links on the south coast, do get funding and we don't have to keep beating our heads against a brick wall for years to come to make sure we get a highway that people can travel on in safety."
