Academic urges further catchment research

Posted October 9, 2008 15:18:00

A wetlands expert from the Charles Sturt University is calling for more research on the Gippsland Lakes catchment.

Professor David Mitchell is in Gippsland this week, and inspected parts of the lakes by boat.

He says the catchment and lakes system is being affected by deforestation and intensive development.

Professor Mitchell says the data collected over the years needs to be collated and analysed.

"Undoubtedly there will need to be some sort of program to assess the accuracy of those observations and that has to continue for a while and the lakes behaviour will change through the seasons," he said.

"Summer will be different to winter and you need to get that overall picture and you need to take samples from the catchment and see what's happening up there."
