Police pushed to limit over bikie visit: union

Posted October 10, 2008 09:09:00

The Police Association says Melbourne's police resources will be pushed to breaking point to cover a bikie gang visit over the weekend.

Victoria Police have issued a statement saying they will protect the public and minimise traffic disruptions, as hundreds of members of the Bandidos motorcycle gang travel up the Princes highway from Geelong.

The police union says officers will be forced to fill 400 extra shifts to monitor the gang's behaviour over the weekend.

The union's secretary-designate, Senior Sergeant Greg Davies said it is an unnecessary strain on an already overstretched police force.

"Our members are concerned of course that they are being drawn from outlying stations that leaves those places with scarce resources where they'll be dedicated to looking after 200 or more bikies instead of looking after the people of their local community," he said.
