Labor demands transparency on regional spending program

Posted October 10, 2008 09:20:00

The State Opposition says the secrecy surrounding the Liberal/National Government's royalties for regions program is unacceptable.

In order to form a minority Government, the Liberals agreed to the Nationals' Royalties policy, requiring 25 per cent of royalty income to be spent in regional areas.

That equates to about $670 million a year.

The Government is yet to outline how the money will be spent, or how many Liberal Party promises will be funded through the program.

Labor's Regional Development Spokeswoman Alannah MacTiernan says the community has a right to know.

"We know they've specified 675 million dollars per annum, but we don't know what the value of these other items that are going to be deducted from that are, before Mr Grylls gets his paws in the honey jar," she said.

"We have no idea what the value of the additional money that Mr Grylls and the National Party have secured for the regions. We need to know what does this deal means."
