New national park for north Qld

Posted October 10, 2008 10:28:00

The Queensland Government has allocated 5,000 hectares of land north of Townsville for Queensland's newest national park.

It is part of a 9,000 hectare parcel of state-owned land known as the Bohle Plains in the state's north.

Natural Resources Minister Craig Wallace says the site was selected for its biodiversity.

He has dismissed any suggestions of 'greenwashing', saying it is a long-term environmental decision rather than an attempt to win votes.

"I would be derelict in my duties if I was simply looking at green preferences," he said.

"What I need to look at as a land manager is the future of Queensland and in Townsville. That green future will be secured through this 5,000 hectare new national park."
