Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife rangers have confirmed there's a small crocodile in Marlow Lagoon, in suburban Darwin.

The area was searched last night after people reported seeing swirling in the water.

A trap will be set today to catch the animal.

Ranger Tom Nichols says it's hard to know where the croc came from, but it may have been released by a local resident.

"There is a possibility it could have come in from one of the creeks which is further over, but most of our creeks are pretty dry now.

"Or there may have been some human interference.

"We've had a couple of aquarium crocs which have been released in certain areas, you know, people's swimming pools and creek systems, and it could possibly be one of those, but I couldn't really say until we catch the animal."

Rangers picked up some 'eye-shine' with torches last night, but were unable to tell if the crocodile is fresh or saltwater.
